The only guests to my anniversary party were a big bunch of Krabbys, and they were only there for the food. I guess even after a whole year here, you can still reach new lows. That's actually kinda reassuring, in a very twisted way.

Ketchup isn't bad for crabs, right? Some of them are starting to look a little pale.

Honestly, I get the impression that's simply how it goes. Mine was little else but ennui, continued frustration at this place's sense of timing, overly sweet cake, and terrible alcohol.

Even bad cake and alcohol sound great at this point. Ever tried eating a damp hotdog while a crab snores on your head?

...well, I suppose yours is objectively worse, but at the same time I'd imagine it isn't also your birthday.

...Oh, wow. Now that's just cruel. Did you at least have pleasant company, or did the universe make sure there was no one you knew around, to kick you down a little more?

I hadn't had proper traveling partners for several months prior to that, and Azalea isn't exactly the most popular destination for trainers who have been here for any length of time. I had my Pokemon, I suppose, but while I find a number of them to be pleasant company, it's not really the same.

And I guess spending time with random locals isn't necessarily more pleasant than solitude, at that point. It's not like they can really understand the feelings that come with the occasion.

I don't think they'd be terribly pleasant company even under better circumstances, to be honest.

A few of them could be pleasant, but not many. I know I wouldn't mind hanging out with Whitney, but I understand that's not a very common opinion.

...not very common at all. How on earth did you manage to find her tolerable? Are you extremely forgiving of temper tantrums?

We share a favorite type. I never even got the temper tantrums, and her advice about Normal-types was extremely useful.

That would explain it, then. Perhaps things would have gone better if I was more invested in Normal-types beyond Smeargle and the ones that are part Flying, but I rather suspect it would have gone poorly either way.

Some personalities just aren't meant to get along. You only have to deal with her once unless you lose, at least.

If nothing else, there's that. Though, I hope she'll prove easy to avoid if the Gym Leaders ever decide to throw some sort of party for everyone again.

Don't worry. If it comes down to it I'm sure I can distract her a few minutes while others make their escape.

That would be greatly appreciated. I mean, if they didn't want us in the library, they should have locked the doors instead of interrupting us while we read.

Given the host's general disposition, I'm sure she wanted to show off the vast resources she had without having it actually serve as a distraction from her.

Ah, that type of personality. Is she like that during badge challenges, too?

I wouldn't know, as I only recently obtained Whitney's badge. It really wouldn't surprise me if she was, though.

Lovely. Maybe I should acquire a few Dragon-types before I challenge her, just in case. Use them as a distraction.

I'm not sure if she'd take as kindly to that as Whitney did, to be honest. She seems like the sort who'd perceive that as you trying to upstage her.

...In that case, I might as well go the whole way and try to defeat her whole team with my Bibarel or my Raticate. If she'll feel upstaged either way...

Hah, yes. At least then you'll be able to get something of a sense of satisfaction out of it.
