Are you asking to be cheered or will a story drive you further to drink?

Some cheer would be nice, but I can drink in your place if your best friend's antics tend to drive you to the bottle.

There's two I'd call closest who I won't choose between because one friendship was made in this world and one in my own. Both are here. Pick one.

Let's go with the one you met here, than, since friends from home seem more popular at the moment.

He's good company to be certain. Faithful and kindly, and often retiring but passing reliable. We'd spoken before we began traveling together, and at a time I found myself bored and both of us alone, so we met and became friends. It was nothing spectacular really.

My only complaint is he's like to toss himself straight out of camp in his sleep but so long as I'm sleeping too it's not much of a bother.

A friendship that's both pleasant and convenient on the road, then. That's nice. Strong friendships don't all need great dramatic beginnings, anyway.

...Just don't let him fall asleep next to a cliff, though.
