So, can anyone tell me how I ended up with a fire-breathing hellhound? Not that I don't like it, but I was wondering why that one out of all those strange animals out there.

[The voice sounds more casually curious than surprised or alarmed or confused, which is exactly how he likes it. He keeps going, ignoring the puppy's whines for the moment.]

Is it a random decision? Did that woman look at me and tell the professor 'Oh, that man looks like a dog lover'? Or did that lab just happen to have a few extra puppies around when I arrived?

[The whines grow louder as he speaks. In fact, by the end of his sentence they are replaced by a bark, followed by the sound of paws running through tall grass.]

...Well, I can already tell I'll be in good paws until I reach the next town, at least. No... purple rat shall ever manage to harm me.

[That one certainly won't, because people hanging around the eastern end of route 29 might have the chance to witness said rat getting caught in a Pokéball. His first capture, he's so proud. They might also get sniffed by an eager puppy, but it probably doesn't bite. Otherwise, the middle-aged man reading the handbook beneath a tree would probably put a stop to it.]

It's because you'll need him, some pokemon aren't very nice to people. [Not to mention it gets worse then rats and birds later on.]

I have a grown up one mister, he's really cool.

Maybe I will, at that, if too many of these creatures can set me on fire. But why a dog over a bird or a cat?

Well other pokémon can do more than just breath fire.

Yep, Cerberus is really awesome! [He actually gets out a pokémon to show you. Out of it comes a bigger and more intimidating hell hound.]

They can also bite, from what I hear over there. And I assume that list of types is not just for show.

Nope, it isn't. It's more than just dogs and cats and stuff. I've seen pokémon made of rock, ones that look like sort of like people, and even plants.

I remember he was level 24 when he evolved, you can look at gear check it!.

All that? I guess no one can say this world lacks variety.

Level 24, uh. This one was almost at level 6 when I checked earlier; looks like we're not there yet. Is that info somewhere in the handbook?

He gets stronger the more he fights. So if he fights a lot he'll be level 24 in no time.

[And once he learns about it he will want it so much.]

With the local wildlife, I foresee lots of fighting in our future. Guess he'll get those horns before I know it.

It's more that just wild pokémon, some of the people from here, will just look at you and challenge you to pokémon battles.

They challenge us? Now that sounds fun. They don't aim to kill, I hope.

No it isn't like that. It's sort of like a wresting match or a karate match.

Only thing that happens is that a pokémon gets knocked out, like what happens when you fight the wild ones.

With low stakes like that, I can see with this sport is so popular. I'll probably try my hand at it sooner or later.

I'm not sure, the pidgeys are a good place to start. They get really really big later and sometimes people sell pokémon eggs you get to see which one's you might like.

Not all of them are birds, I have a lot of flying types.

I almost forgot all pokémon come form eggs, so you don't just get flying ones.
