Well, smaller steps are better, and you have to keep your center of gravity positioned over your support. With traction that's usually not a problem because you know the support won't slide, but on ice you're compromised so you have to manually compensate.
If you're making a rocking motion when you walk, rolling from your heel to the ball of your foot, you're doing it wrong and you'll slip. Think in terms of keeping a vertical line over your feet and you won't slide around as much.
