[Today is an artistic day on the Pokégear, for Captain Ash's Pokémon have decided to show off their masterpiece: a pyramid, lovingly built from potions, pokéballs and other knick-knacks found in their room. It's almost completed; Bidoof, Zigzagoon and Hoothoot are adding a few bottles, given to them by Houndoom, Pidgey and Rattata. Sentret chitters from behind the Gear, Starly keeps an eye on the door, and Aipom-

Aipom brings the finishing touch: a Meowth's egg, meant for the very top of the structure. The others fall silent, move out of the way as she approaches, hold their breaths as she completes their work...

...And then the egg suddenly cracks.

The whole team freezes in its tracks, while a voice is heard from the next room over.]

Was that a crack I just heard? ...That's weird, I thought I'd left the egg next to my bag...

[The last thing the camera catches before Scarf turns it off in her panic is Bouncy's look of worry as the rest of their friends run like hell and Ash's steps come closer. Looks like someone (or multiple someones) is going to be in trouble.]

Oh my, how cute... It's so rare to see Pokemon playing amongst themselves like that~

Although... I do wonder if that will get them all in trouble...

[The response comes ten minutes later. All that can now be seen of the room is a Meowth's forehead, poking at the camera.]

Indeed it will. I have no idea what made them think an egg would be stable on top of that pile.

Ambition, perhaps?

Could be it. Or maybe their artistic vision was so powerful that they forgot to take physics into account.

... physics? Do you... think they have a full grasp of such a thing?

...Probably not. They're all young, and I haven't seen any bird schools on my way here.

They would likely be some kind of genius Pokemon if they did, don't you think~?

They would be, yes. But they're merely smart and clever, and that's good enough for me.

[And it's apparently good enough for the Meowth, since she starts purring madly.]

Ufufu... Those are always good traits to have~ If nothing else, it certainly sounds like you have a very happy cat.

She's surprisingly cheerful, for a girl who nearly went tumbling down a pile of our supplies. Maybe it's a newborn thing.

[And she just goes and purrs even more loudly.]

Or perhaps she's enjoying all the praise you're giving her...

Really, now. Using the circumstances of her birth to fish for compliments?

[But he sounds more amused than anything.]

Well... She is a cat~ I know real ones might often seem aloof and distant, but they always seem to love attention...

That makes two princesses in the same team. I'm done for.

Oh my... Perhaps you just have a natural affinity towards them?

Maybe. They're the first two I've met, so for all I know I do.

Not one. I've had more luck with normal, everyday girls.

Are you certain they're all normal? I've heard some rather interesting stories from some of the girls here...

Ones of politicians... Or of witches... Or even idols who live in space~!

...Politicians and idols who live in colonies are normal enough, but I have to admit that witches aren't something I ever expected to meet.

I certainly hope that was an egg you adopted and not one that any of them helped create.

The very first egg I buy, and the rest of them nearly send her tumbling down our supplies. I have no idea what came over them. Adopted or not, that's no way to treat a baby.

These sort of things happen, unfortunately, and cannot be helped. Curious Pokemon will be curious.

Probably. They understand battle commands and 'food' in human speech, so they must have heard 'new friend', 'newborn' and 'be careful' at some point during the last few days. I've been telling them about her for a while.

Her? You are confident it will be a girl?

[ Her voice is growing softer only due to the cute feline. ] Mm, hopefully this is the only incident of this nature.

[He laughs a little.]

The girls in the team decided from the beginning that she'd be one of them, and it looks like they were right. She certainly acts like a young lady already. Between that and the scolding they just received, the rest of them should be more careful next time.

Ah, she has hatched already?

[ Her eyes are wide with surprise. Of course, she should have put it together. ] My apologies, it appears my mind is not all there today.

It should be a good experience for them all at least. A life could have been lost, er, I believe at least. I have never witnessed the death of a Pokemon, nor have I heard of one.

It's understandable, really. She certainly moves more than the last newborn I saw.

[She purrs much more loudly, too.]

Whether or not she could have been lost, she wasn't. That's good enough for me.

She sounds lively as well. [ Holding back a giggle. ]

So long as you can find the positive in anything, then nothing can hold you back. That is what I was told once in this place.

Although I believe that man to be too much of an optimist for his own good.

I don't know if I'll manage to find the positive in everything I'll see here, but babies tend to bring out one's optimism. Was that observation first made after another case of indirect parenthood?
